Sclerotherapy is a technique for treating spider and varicose veins. It’s been around for over 100 years.
It is performed by injecting a substance (glycerin or sotradecol) into the vein. The substance strips the inner lining of the vein making it chemically “sticky”. Then, with compression, the vein walls stick together and are no longer a tube. Your body then reabsorbs the vein remnants over the next six weeks, and they disappear. Spider veins respond well to treatment and resolve over 3 to 6 weeks. If the veins respond to the treatment, usually they will not reappear. However, new veins may appear over time. If needed, you may return for injections.
Sclerotherapy is very successful. Almost (80%) of injected veins disappear. Many people require more than one session and this will be explained during your visit. Not all spider veins are amenable to sclerotherapy. Some are smaller than can be accessed by injection. These are usually on the face and may require laser therapy.
