An office visit for filler injection can take 30-60 minutes depending on whether you are known to the practice. Every office visit is accompanied by before and after pictures which take time. Your injector will need to plan and draw on the face to decide where filler should and should not be placed. The actual injection time is around 15 minutes. Extra time is devoted to pictures, planning and explaining after care instructions.

How long your filler will last is dependent upon what type of filler you use and where it is placed. Areas with a lot of movement, such as the lips, tend to loss volume quicker than the cheeks and jawline, for example. Radiesse has the longest staying power at a year or more (close to 18 months in many patients). Restylane and Juvaderm also last close to a year. Restylane and Juvaderm products are hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. Radiesse is different. It is calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) spheres suspended in a carrier gel. This increases in staying power and increases its stiffness. So it is ideal for cheeks, jawline and chin.

Depending on the product and the areas treated, you should be able to notice results immediately after receiving filler injections. 

There is a serious, but thankfully rare, risk of the filler getting into a blood vessel. This is managed medically. There is a risk redness at the injection site, infection, acne-like skin eruptions, asymmetry, bleeding from the injection site, lumps, palpability of the filler under the surface of the skin, skin rash with itching, skin redness and, under- or over-correction of wrinkles.

There is usually some mild pain and swelling at the injection site, but downtime is minimal. Depending on the area the pain and swelling can vary. The chin is typically more swollen and tender than the body. You can resume your normal activities in 24-48 hours. Exercise can be resumed in 48 hrs depending on the location of the injection.

The most common side effect is injection site pain and swelling, which resolves in a few days. This depends on the area treated. The swelling lasts approximately a week. The soreness resolves in a few days. Some swelling may persist for several weeks, but this is less common. You may get some discoloration of the skin, which also resolves after a few days. You may have localized hair loss at the injection site. Some patients report trouble swallowing if injected into the chin area, but this is related to post-injection swelling and resolves as the swelling goes down. Some patients report localized skin numbness which also resolves in a few days.

Treatments are spaced out every 4-6 weeks and the number of treatments needed varies by patient. Depending on the treatment area and individual response, it may require anywhere from 2-6 treatments. By adding Ultimate Contour in between we can reduce the number of treatments needed.
